LightBurn calculates vector paths using an internal cut planner that follows explicit user toggles rather than guesswork. When left on default or uninspected parameters, the planner may crisscross your workpiece erratically, drop finished perimeters before cutting delicate interiors, and waste valuable gantry operating hours.

Configuring the Optimization Settings dialog correctly is what transforms an unpredictable job file into a dependable manufacturing routine. By establishing clear priority rules inside the software, operators prevent dropped parts from tilting into the nozzle path, eliminate air-cutting travel delays, and guarantee repeatable edge quality across every production cycle.

Step Evaluation

Configuring Core Ordering Criteria

Inside the Laser window, clicking Optimization Settings opens a sequence hierarchy list. The cut planner reads these options from top to bottom, evaluating each active constraint before applying secondary pathing logic. To prevent chaos across complex multi-layer designs, three core switches form the foundation of dependable job execution:

  • Enable "Order by Layer" as the primary master switch so all engraving, marking, and relief passes finalize before through-cutting begins.
  • Keep "Cut inner shapes first" activated to ensure enclosed mounting holes and slots are severed while the surrounding stock remains securely anchored.
  • Turn on "Reduce travel moves" to permit the pathing engine to calculate shortest Euclidean vector transitions within each isolated layer.

"A faster travel move is meaningless if an early perimeter cut drops the part slightly out of focus before the text engraving finishes. Real shop efficiency is about sequence reliability first."

Critical Review

Balancing Rapid Travel Against Mechanical Hazards

The optimizer includes additional features such as "Order by Groups" and "Order by Priority". When vectors are grouped, LightBurn treats the entire group as a solitary entity. If "Order by Groups" sits above "Order by Layer", the laser will execute all layers belonging to group A before ever starting group B. This can inadvertently trigger a cutting pass on one tag while an adjacent tag has not even been engraved yet.

Furthermore, aggressive direction sorting ("Choose best starting point" and "Choose best direction") can dramatically compress total job duration on large matrix arrays. However, on machines with slight backlash or air-assist hose tension, altering cut direction randomly along shared borders can introduce subtle kerf variations. Test direction toggles on a single sample piece before releasing large production batches.

Safe Handover

Pre-Run Validation in the Preview Engine

Never press Start without reviewing the job in LightBurn's built-in Preview window (Alt+P). In the preview screen, enable "Show traversal moves" to inspect the red transit lines connecting cut segments. Drag the scrub slider slowly from left to right. Confirm that surface markings precede through-cuts, verify that internal cutouts separate before the external shell releases, and verify that the laser head does not traverse dangerously across already severed drop pieces.
